One Million Guitars – A chance for all children to discover music

Music is the only true universal language. The transformative power of music is unparalleled. It unites continents and humans like no other medium. Yet access to music education for our most vulnerable communities continues to diminish.

One Million Guitars is a 501(c)(3) Non-Profit Foundation on a mission to impact the lives of millions of children around the globe through the power of a musical instrument. Having early access to music education can transform the future of a great learner and affect the trajectory of their entire life. Apart from the subjective notion that music lifts the soul, it has been empirically shown that learners with the benefit of a musical training excel in other academic and creative domains. Yet so many of our brightest minds, those that can inspire future generations to improve our world, do not have access to a music education.

One Million Guitars, 1MG, is going to fix this dilemma, one guitar at a time. Under the leadership and vision of master musician David Broza, a lifelong peace ambassador and children’s advocate, over the next five years, 1MG will distribute more than one million guitars worldwide to children and leverage social media to create an online music academy and community of engaged, young learners.

These millions of kids will each be empowered by and granted a 1MG scholarship that includes a beautiful professional instrument built to last, online training by world renowned recording artists and professional musicians and access to local events and peer to peer training.

This all starts and ends with a kid with a guitar. Given the opportunity to surface the best version of themselves., millions of like minded children around the world will unite in a global chorus of personal growth, potential, diversity and peace.

Join us on this quest to bring the empowerment of music education into the lives of millions of kids.

How does it work?

1MG offers a 1MG Scholarship to young students that includes the 1MG signature guitar, extra strings as well as the 1MG starter instruction book. Students then need everything they need to start on their transformation journey. Additionally they will have access to online video tutorials created by some of the world’s leading artists as well as community contributors.

How can I help?

You can join the community of passionate individuals making a difference in million of kids lives in a variety of ways. Contact us to join the 1MG team and help in creating instructional content, doing community outreach and starting a 1MG group in a community in need as well as help our fundraising efforts. How do I contribute?

Head over to our page to contribute to our tax-exempt 501(c)(3) Foundation. Your contribution will go directly towards facilitating the 1MG program and manufacturing and distributing 1MG Guitars. Every $100 contributed facilitates another life altering event for a child that would otherwise never experience the transformative potential of a musical instrument.

As the winter bites, FFM supports Crisis – It doesn’t need to be like this!

Rough sleeping in England soars by 15% with more than 4,700 people sleeping outside on any given night, new figures show

Crisis has described the 15 per cent rise in rough sleeping in England as a ‘catastrophe’, following continual rises since 2010, when evidence shows how the problem can be fixed.

The Government’s official annual street count found that on a given night in autumn last year 4,751 people were recorded sleeping rough. This is more than double since 2010.

Crisis is also warning that the true number of rough sleepers is far greater, as its own researchfinds that more than 8,000 people were currently sleeping rough across England, predicted to rise to 15,000 by 2026, if nothing changes. This is on top of an additional 9,000 homeless people sleeping in tents, cars, trains and buses.

While we welcome the Government’s commitment to halve rough sleeping by 2022 and end it by 2027, it is urging it to take immediate action through its Homelessness and Rough Sleeping Taskforce to tackle this emergency situation and help the thousands of people forced to sleep in dangerous conditions every single night.

Worryingly, those sleeping without a roof over their head are almost 17 times more likely to have been victims of violence and 15 times more likely to have suffered verbal abuse compared to the general public, according to previous Crisis research.

Crisis has also published an evidence review undertaken by Cardiff University and Heriot-Watt University for the first time revealing the best evidence from here and around the world on what works to end rough sleeping.

The review finds the best way to end rough sleeping is by:

  • Widely adopting a housing-led approach where housing someone is made priority. This includes the use of Housing First, a programme which gives the most vulnerable rough sleepers their own home and specialist support.
  • Taking swift action to quickly end street homelessness through interventions such as No Second Night Out. This programme helps get people off the street and into accommodation and reduces the number of rough sleepers who develop further support needs.
  • Taking a ‘person-centred’ approach by tailoring support to take individuals’ needs into account, such as using personalised budgets to commission services.
  • Ensuring interventions take account of local housing markets and individuals’ needs.

Any strategy to address rough sleeping must address these principles and sit alongside good quality short term emergency accommodation and prevention services.

Chief Executive of Crisis Jon Sparkes said:

“It is truly a catastrophe that in a country as prosperous as this, more and more people are finding themselves forced to sleep in dangerous and freezing conditions, when we have evidence to show how the situation could be turned around. Today’s report makes it only too clear that unless we take action as a society, the problem is only going to keep getting worse with every year that passes.

“Rough sleeping ruins lives, leaving people vulnerable to violence and abuse, and taking a dreadful toll on mental and physical health. Our research has shown how rough sleepers are 17 times more likely to be victims of violence. This is no way for anyone to live.

“With the right support at the right time, homelessness doesn’t need to be inevitable. While we warmly welcome the Government’s pledges to tackle rough sleeping, including a Homelessness and Rough Sleeping Taskforce, now that we know the solutions to end rough sleeping for good we’re calling on the Government to take swift action to tackle the problem and fix it once and for all.”

So Stereo Music News Summary December 2017

Mixcloud Taps Gracenote’s Music Identification System For Better Song Recognition:

Mixcloud has been the leader for uploading DJ sets for some time with SoundCloud having to reign itself in from the wild wild west days of its start. It is looking to extend that lead with a new deal with Gracenote that will give Mixcloud access to Gracenote’s music identification system. This will allow for better identification of songs in each mix, notably mainstream tracks. It will still be up to users to get the times right and fill in the blanks where Gracenote fails.

YouTube Cutting Loops From Streaming Totals:

Earlier this year, YouTube was at the center of a controversy regarding chart position. Post Malone’s team had gamed the system by releasing a “full version” of his song “Rockstar” that was in fact just the chorus looped over and over again. It garnered millions of views and helped the song go number 1. In a statement to Pitchfork, YouTube head, Lyor Cohen and a spokesperson says they are stopping that and will be actively removing deceptive videos like that.

Penske Media Buys Majority Stake In Rolling Stone Owner, Wenner Media:

Rolling Stone’s owner Wenner Media has been on the market for a few months now. The Wenner family has been looking to sell their remaining 51% share of the company for some time now and have found a buyer in Penske Media Corporation at a valuation of just over $100 million according to Variety. Wenner has been laden with debt and struggling finances recently. They sold a 49% stake to BandLab, a Singapore-based company, which will still retain its part of the company.

The Glitch Mob’s Justin Boreta Joins Virtual Reality Company TRIPP:

The Glitch Mob’s Justin Boreta, or as he goes by as a solo artist, Boreta, will join mood-altering Virtual Reality company TRIPP as their creative director. Together with audio-visual producer and programmer Matthew Davis, Boreta has formed Superposition, a project focused on creating and performing immersive ambient music. TRIPP is a wellness technology that is developing its products through virtual reality and Boretta is going to help using music.

“As a long time meditator, I’m honored to work with Nanea [CEO Nanea Reeves] and the rest of the team to positively affect people’s mindsets,” says Boreta. “Using audio to create meaningful, positive change in people’s lives is a large part of that plan.”

Apple Music Facing Class Action Lawsuit Over Unpaid Royalties:

Apple is facing a class action lawsuit for allegedly not paying royalties to an independent musician Bryan Eich. Eich and his lawyer, say that Apple failed to license mechanical rights for the compositions on the service. Eich is asking for $30,000 for each song that Apple Music allegedly infringed upon. This isn’t anything new for streaming services. Other services like Spotify, Rhapsody and Google Play have all been hit with similar lawsuits and in those they have argued that they can’t always identify the publishing rights holders in order to license their compositions. The lawsuit claims that Apple did not do its proper due diligence in licensing the songs, so we will see if this becomes a larger suit with more artists.

Live Nation, Bowery Presents Founder Form New NYC Promoter:

Live Nation and Michael Swier, co-owner of two iconic New York music venues, Mercury Lounge and Bowery Ballroom, have announced a new booking joint venture called Mercury East Presents. Both venues used to booked by Bowery Presents, which was sold off to AEG Presents, but Swier left the company and has now started this Live Nation partnership. Mercury East will book both mercury Lounge and Bowery Ballroom, in addition to Live Nation’s Irving Plaza, Gramery Theatre, Warsaw and Ford Amphitheater at Coney Island Boardwalk. It will also help with The Beacon Theater and Madison Square Garden, and will collaborate with Founders Entertainment, the team behind Governors Ball and The Meadows according to Billboard.
